“After the Holidays.” How often have you heard those words uttered in recent weeks? More than likely, you have said them yourself more than once. Between planning for festivities, the search for the perfect gifts and year end preparations for your business, the days of December can seem too few and too short.

While it may feel as though quantum physics is conspiring against you, the truth is that the days of December have the same number of hours as all the other days in all the other months. It is the additional demands on your life that create the impression of ‘not enough time.’

The solution is simple – time management – it’s the execution that can be tricky. Actually, time management is a misnomer. Time manages itself quite well. It ticks by in the same way everyday, like clockwork (couldn’t resist the pun).

This may sound harsh but the truth is, what really needs to be managed is you. When you can become disciplined and systematic about your daily activities, you may be astonished to realize just how much you can get accomplished, regardless of how many tasks are on your list.

Here are two simple things you can do to reclaim the feeling of command over your days.

1. Write things down. Getting the To Do list out of your head on onto paper clears your mind for creative thinking.

No need to purchase an elaborate time management system. Just keep a legal pad within reach at all times. Draw a line down the center of the page. Label the left column ‘To Do,’ and the right one ‘Ideas.’

When a task that you need to accomplish or an idea pops into your head, immediately write it in the appropriate column. Then promptly forget about it and continue with what you were working on.

2. Prepare tomorrow, today. At the end of your business day, review your ‘To Do’ column. Cross off anything that managed to eliminate itself in that day (some things seem to magically get completed just by the act of writing them down).

Next choose the top 3 things that absolutely must get addressed tomorrow and schedule them into your day. Treat these things as you would an appointment with a client. You wouldn’t blow off a client because you were tired or didn’t feel like meeting with them right now, so don’t do it to yourself either!

Why not give it a try, beginning today. Commit to repeating this process everyday for the rest of the month and I promise you’ll be amazed at how much longer the days will suddenly become.
